The Field & The Invocation
The
identification of Sacred Space with the field of consciousness & the
invocation of the guiding metaphor or image which inhabits the space -- a
tree & a greater tree which is a mountain
A simple music establishes the mood -- the emotional geography
There is always a field.
A field of consciousness.
And there is always a centre to the field
because that is the nature of a field.
And there is always a boundary.
That is also the nature of a field.
At the centre of the field of consciousness
there is always a body.
And this body gives direction to the field
as the field gives direction to the body.
1. East (yellow) & the rising sun.
The eye of invention.
Beginnings.
Motivation arising in consciousness
like the rays of the morning sun.
Initiation of making.
2. South (red) sensuality.
The love for the work of making things.
The fecundity of things
in their desire to be made.
3. West (blue) & the sinking sun.
The left eye of night.
Completion of making.
The perfection of things.
What death has to say.
4. North (white) & the clarity of relations
between lightness & darkness,
natural & conventional things.
Judgment. Ceremony
& the keen pleasure which comes
from the right relation between
the form of a thing & function.
The field of consciousness
also always has an upward
& a downward dimension,
-- the head & the feet --
giving a particular level,
a mood,
a lightness
& a darkness.
At the boundary of the field
of consciousness
there are all sorts of
dangerous animals.
Inside the boundary of the field,
there are many "things."
Solid things
& not so solid things.
Things like:
A tree
An emotion
A mountain
A river
A flame
the sound of a car
A wooden house
The sky
A musical phrase
Silver
Earth
A child's hand
Wind
The roots of clouds
A red dog
A school of fish
Hair
The sun
A plastic spoon
A King & Queen
Words
growing like weeds
the brain
a little wind
snow.
The tree stands
at the very centre
of the field.
A pillar.
A cone of light.
Branches & the leaves
of branches --
their shadowy undersides.
The rough bark --
brown, golden, silver-grey, dark.
The trunk of the tree
flowing upwards & downwards.
Dark roots invisible -- underground.
The high branches screen the sky.
The low branches
cast a deep shadow
on the grass.
Animal eyes look out of the shadow.
The tree trembles
in the flashing light of the sun.
The whole world shimmers:
green, blue, amber, honey, gold.
Behind the tree,
the mountain stands up
in the morning.
The whole world stands around
waiting to see what will happen
between the cone of light
which is a tree,
and the great white pillar
of the mountain.
Hey, and the sky is always up there --
blue as anything.
Hey, the sky is always coming around
to help out,
bright sky,
brighter than all our troubles.
[The sequence ends with the cycling of
individual words -- "Things"]
