Lexicon: Register 7 (3 Hall) [2 Hall??]
And the old man sits in his room
& watch the first false dawn-lite
grow on his window,
come out across
the glass dome
of the city
sweet transfusion
of milky-blu light
seeping into the wires
of consciousness,
start up the dawn talk
language of the birds.
In the Glass City
things are all unfinished
nothing is completed
nothing is done
everything
is in the process
of becoming
changing
changing
into something else.
We are so new at this . . .
everywhere we turn
we find the unfinished world
our own unfinished animal bodies --
limbs & organs unfinished
unfinished brain, unfinished spine,
unfinished desires & intentions
unfinished brain, unfinished mind
unfinished pleasures & pains
the unfinished trajectory of history itself
all the unfinished projects
of separation or fusion
the unfinished work of creation
the unfinished job of destruction
the unfinished dance
the unfinished song
the unfinished project of love
and of hatred
the human soul itself all unfinished
always restless for perfection
the way it is
the way it was made
just a provisional anti-dote
for the fact that
everything
is always breaking down
falling apart
for the fact that
we can't live forever . . .
The way we are,
& in the city of our unfinished desire
its always waiting
for the coming change
the coming metamorphosis,
the coming perfection of the mind
& the body
the coming perfection of the world
the changing of pain into light
grief into consciousness
the changing of our unfinished lives
into something finished,
something done
the coming perfection
of the all & the everything.
And the alchemical bird sits on the wire
& gold light shines out of his bones
& the one called the Slave of Habit
pulls a white rabbit out of his dirty hat.
And there's a finger of pale sunlight
climbs the faded wallpaper vine
in an empty room in the Sunset Hotel
while out on the shining wet street
they say the blue man dance
with Crazy Jane
& the spectacle of their love
is at once excessive & noisy,
impossible, endless,
lost, inevitable,
crazy, necessary,
transitory, ridiculous,
sublime, ecstatic, hopeless,
absurd,
